What USCIS requires from a foreign-language document

Submit a full English translation of every foreign-language document you send to USCIS. Include the translator’s written confirmation that the translation is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate into English. See 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3): translation requirement.
USCIS family-petition instructions (Form I-130) ask for the translator’s name, signature, date and contact details. Check the instructions for your own form before submitting.
The certificate confirms the translation’s accuracy. It does not verify that the original document is genuine or guarantee approval of your application. If your receiving authority specifically asks for notarization or an apostille, share its instructions with us; these do not replace the translation certificate.

Comune and civil-status record context
An Italian civil record may identify a comune and a civil-status office, with register numbers and information about the type of copy issued. A certificato, estratto or fuller copy can contain different detail. Keep the document title visible so the translation describes the actual record supplied.
A place name in the issuing-office heading is not necessarily the same as the person’s birthplace or place of marriage. Field labels distinguish these roles. Translation does not obtain a different registry version or determine which version your filing requires.

Annotations can change how a record is understood
A marginal or appended annotation may refer to a later marriage, correction or other recorded event. Include the complete page and reverse side rather than photographing only the main entry. Readable stamps and official titles belong to the full translation.
Event dates and later annotation dates
Distinguish the event date, registration information and date a copy was issued. Where an annotation has its own date or reference number, keep that separate from the main entry. Do not omit it because it was added later.
Names and references across family documents
Provide all names as shown, including multiple given names and previous surnames where present. A current passport can be supplied as a spelling reference. Point out a discrepancy between the passport and the source without altering either file.
Names across a family’s documents
A family set may contain a birth record, marriage certificate and a later court order with different name forms. Label each document and keep the sequence clear. Translating the records does not resolve whether a name change is legally effective or whether two people named similarly are the same person.

Academic awards and court records
Academic records need the award title, institution, course entries, grades and explanatory notes. The translation does not assign U.S. equivalency to an Italian qualification. If the source includes a supplement, identify whether it is part of the translation order.
A divorce or other court record may contain several pages and a separate endorsement about its status. Send the complete selected record. A translated heading alone cannot establish finality or replace missing operative wording.
Preparing the source files
Use readable full-page scans or PDFs. Check page edges, reverse-side text and small registry references. If a handwritten note is difficult to see, add a closer image as well as the full page. We mark unreadable text as “illegible” and then consult you.
Extracts and recipient instructions
Avoid substituting a typed personal summary for the issued record or assuming an extract contains every field of a longer record. Share the intended authority and any document-specific request before confirmation so the requested translation scope is clear.
